The side rolling hatch covers are very often used for the weather decks on dry bulk carriers as OBO Ore/ Bulk/Oil or Ore/Oil ships. There are basically two different designs: one single panel or two panels per hatch. The panels can be stowed transversally, in which case they are known as side rolling covers, or longitudinally. In the case that there are two panels per hatch the panels can be stowed each on opposite side or in exceptional cases together on one side. In each case the covers opened by rolling on rails installed on extended coamings. The covers are driven by rack and pinion system, rack and pinion plus wire, endless wire, or chain. Specially designed sealing and securing arrangements are giving the covers efficient and safe operations in daily practice.
