AlNiCo magnets are made of a composite of aluminum, nickel and cobalt, with small amounts of other elements added in a quest to enhance the properties of the magnet. These magnets have excellent temperature stability and a good resistance against demagnetization. Nevertheless, the relative magnetic strength of AlNiCo magnets is much weaker than NdFeB magnets, SmCo magnets or Ferrite magnets. Alnico magnets resist corrosion and have physical properties more forgiving than those of ferrite magnets, but are not quite as desirable as a metal.
There are two principle manufacturing processes used to produce Alnico magnets: casting and sintering. Casted AlNiCo reaches higher energy products and allows the design of intricate shapes, while sintering is usually restricted to smaller sizes and offers slightly lower magnetic properties, but has tighter dimensional tolerances. AlNiCo magnets can handle high working temperatures of up to 550 C. Therefore, AlNiCo magnets are used more and more in temperature-sensitive applications such as hall-effect and MR-based automotive and electronic sensors, amplifiers, actuators, motors and instruments.
