DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN & HISTORY :
The carpets of Meshed, the largest weaving center in northeast Persia, include many interesting pieces of remarkable quality which reach the West, mainly via England. The century old carpet weaving tradition of Meshed was developed under several rulers and there is evidence that designers, and probably carpet weavers from Meshed were employed in other major Persian weaving centers.
Meshed has been an important cultural center for more than one thousand years. Harun al-Rashid, the tenth century poet Firdusi, and Rhayyam are buried here as is Nadir Shah, a famous ruler of more recent times, who made Meshed his capital in the early 18th century. Meshed is second only to Mecca in importance to the Islamic religion. Countless Persians who are unable to undertake the journey to Mecca as a Hajji, make a pilgrimage to Meshed, to pray as a Mashadi at the grave of the eighth Imam, the Imam Reza. Even today, it is prohibited for the unbeliever to enter the holy places of Meshed.
Typical for Meshed is the precise and filigree drawing of many small floral ornaments, arabesques and tendril forms.
This carpet has SHAHAABASI design with different leaves and patterns.
400 x 300 cm, USD 70 000
